Sleep

I need it so bad. I am in an online community for babies that were born in May so our babies hit milestones at the same time. I constantly hear about how their babies are sleeping all night long. WHAT?? This makes me so jealous! I really do look forward to when they wake up around 5-6 a.m. because (and I totally know this is a bad idea) I pop them in bed with me and get a few hours worth of baby snuggles before work.

Last week I went to see my OB and I told her and the nurse they weren't sleeping through the night. They were surprised and the nurse said both her kiddos started sleeping 12 hours a night right at three months. I feel all the time like I have been hit by a truck. After my c-section we had a few bad experiences that made recovery a little more difficult. On top of recovering from major surgery, I wanted to make sure I always woke up with them in the night because I had waited for them for so long I didn't want to miss a thing. I was a level 5 nut job after about three weeks! I told my OB about some throbbing I have in the area and she said that a full c-section recovery actually takes NINE months to a YEAR! Nobody ever told me that before!

I would really love to work out also. I know I would feel better and sleep better with the sleep that I'm getting. I started strong and lost a few pounds, but have gained it all back because I don't have the time to work out and have sucked at dieting. I just feel too guilty if the babies are awake after a full day of work taking personal time to workout. I make it through the day by being cracked out on caffeine pills and actual caffeine, which is also not healthy. Last night we put them to bed at 8:30 p.m. which is really early. Ocean actually made it to 1:30 a.m. after that but Ever only made it until 11:00 p.m. but that would at least give me a workout.

Any ideas????? How can I get my babies to sleep? How am I going to start taking care of myself so I can be the best mommy I can?

I'm hoping to start juicing tomorrow and detoxing my body so that should make me feel better in about a week. If you know of any good juices leave them in the comment section!!

  2. Ash,
My kids didn't sleep through the night until 6 1/2 months. I guess that's both the good news and the bad news. Sorry. They DID do it eventually though. I know it's not universally popular, but some CIO is okay. Honest. Especially with two. But probably not until 4 months or older. And, they do mature neurologically so if you are providing the right set up, when their brains are ripe, they WILL STTN. Hang in there and GET OFF the caffeine pills!

    I feel your pain.

  3. We get teased with a 7pm-4/5am night once a week, but our little guy has regressed. 12am and 3am for me last night. 2am and 5am the night before. You're not alone.

Just remember that it won't last forever and you will eventually get more sleep. I hope the juicing and detox work.

  4. My daughter did not sleep through the night until she was 9.5 months old (she's 3.5 now). She would go to bed around 7:30 or 8 and gave a nice stretch until about 1 or 2 a.m. but then it was up every 3 hours to nurse. Then, one night at 9.5 months, she started sleeping 12 hours straight and that was that. Scared the heck out of us the first couple nights :) My son (also nursing) started sleeping 12 hours around 3.5 months. Every baby is different. The good news is that eventually, they will sleep for long periods!

  8. I think your nurse's kids are unusual or else she is full of BS. (People tend to exaggerate). My DD was over 12 mos. and still waking up for a 2a.m. feeding. Your babies' size plays a factor - you may need to wait until they (and their stomachs) are big enough to hold and digest a big meal.

For useful info about babies' sleep and napping patterns, I highly recommend this book:
"Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr. Weissbluth. You can't make them sleep if they're not ready, but the book helps you understand where they're at and what will come next. Good luck, my sleepy buddy!

  9. I'm sorry, but I don't have a clue. My only experience is with babysitting, and the best overnight sleepers are the ones who have had a very strict napping and eating schedule. I think it was something like wake at 6am, eat play, nap at 9:00-11am, wake up, eat, play, nap at 2:00-4:00, wake-up, eat play, bed at 7:00pm and sleep until the morning. This method is called something, but I have no clue what it is. These babies I sat for had this pattern until they were almost 2!!!! I always thought it seemed so dreamy--I mean, if you look at the schedule, the kids are only awake for about 9 hours per day.

  10. Mine gave me nice stratches of sleep by 4 months. I mean 7-8 hours, not 11-12. I was in heaven since it was more sleep than I had goten prior. I was still having vivid memories of the end of pregnancy, so anything more than 3 hours in a row was heaven. LOL

You will sleep again... and this will fade into a blurry memory. (probably from exhaustion..tee hee)

(My c-section bled from one spot for 4 months. This is tmi... or just gross, sorry - but it eventually got a grape sized hard mass which drained puss and then healed up immediately after that. Here I am 4.5+ years later and the area is still numb. I have given up on the feeling coming back. Doctors keep saying it might.)
